Description
You can help bring the bees back with easy to grow wildflower seeds
The last 50 years has been witness to huge declines in pollinators and other garden wildlife, but together we can really really do something to reverse this.
97% of natural bee and butterfly habitat has been lost in the UK since WW2. 97%. Ninety Seven Percent. It's frightening and critical.
With your help, we can start to restore the lost wildflower habitat and make an important contribution to the biodiversity of Great Britain 🌻
Created by conservation scientists and 100% British made, Seedball is a unique innovation to help more people grow bee and butterfly-friendly wildflowers. They are manufactured in-house using a mixture of UK-native seeds, clay, peat-free compost and chilli powder to create a protective casing against seed predators (e.g. birds and ants).
They’re incredibly easy to use - scatter (no digging!) on top of soil, and with rain and warm sun, the seeds will grow!
Each tube contains 20 Seedballs each packed with wildlife-friendly wildflower seeds. They will cover 1 square metre in a garden bed or 3-5 medium sized pots (leave at least 10cm between each ball). They will work well in window boxes, balcony pots, garden beds and wildlife gardens. It’s time to rewild!
Best scattered in Spring or Autumn.
Choose between the following wildflowers:
- Oxeye Daisy
- Red Campion
- Common Poppy
- Cornflower
- Forget-Me-Not
Size: 9.3cm high x 3.7cm diameter
Oxeye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare): Perennial. Approx 30 seeds per ball.
Height: 30-90cm
Flowers: May to September
In Austria and Germany oxeye daisies were hung inside the house as it was believed they would repel lightning.
Red Campion (Silene dioica): A perennial with rose pink petals. Approx 15 seeds per ball.
Height: 20-60cm
Flowers: March to November
Silenus the merry god of the woodlands in Greek mythology, gave his name to Silene dioica. The second part of its scientific name, dioica, means 'two houses', and refers to the fact that each Red Campion plant has flowers of one sex only, so that two plants are needed to make seeds.
Common Poppy (Papaver rhoeas): A bright red flowering annual - hugely popular and often used as a symbol of remembrance. Approx 100 seeds per ball.
Height: 30-60cm.
Flowers: May to July
The remembrance poppy is the common field poppy, one of the first wildflowers to colonise disturbed ground or fallow cornfields. It became identified with the battle zones of the First World War, or Flanders Fields, which were originally corn fields.
Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus): Annual. Approx 8 seeds per ball.
Height: 90cm
Flowers: June to August
Cornflowers are edible. They have a cucumber-like taste. Flowers can be consumed in the form of salad and tea, or used as a garnish.
Forget-Me-Not (Myosotis arvensis): Short annual with blue-grey flowers occasionally interspersed with pink flowers. Approx 50 seeds per ball.
Height: 10-40cm
Flowers: April to October
Forget-me-nots have been used in the past for their astringent properties. The name Myosotis is derivation of the Latin and Greek for mouse and ears.
Emily & Ana, the creators of Seedball, are on a mission to help increase the abundance of British wildflowers and wildlife that depend upon them. They believe that if we can all better use whatever space we have available to us (whether a back garden, balcony, window box, little patio etc) we can together have a hugely beneficial impact on our local ecosystems.
They want Seedball to inspire a wildlife gardening revolution while providing a very handy way of going about it! Conservation is in the heart and soul of Seedball and one day we dream to fund their own Seedball wildflower reserves.
