Basil: Aromatic annual or biennial with bright green, elliptic leaves and small, tubular white or pink-tinged flowers. The Latin word basileus means king: in ancient times these leaves were used to create perfumes for monarchs.
Mint: Mint is a versatile, aromatic herb belonging to the Mentha genus. Known for its fresh, cool flavor and fragrance, mint leaves are commonly green with serrated edges. The plant thrives in moist, shaded areas and spreads rapidly, often considered invasive. Mint varieties include spearmint and peppermint, each with distinct flavors. It's used in culinary dishes, teas, and beverages, as well as in cosmetics and medicines for its soothing properties. Mint aids digestion, alleviates headaches, and has antibacterial qualities. The plant's vibrant green foliage and purple or white flowers also make it a popular choice for gardens.
Chives: Allium are bulbous herbaceous perennials with a strong onion or garlic scent, linear, strap-shaped or cylindrical basal leaves and star-shaped or bell-shaped flowers in an umbel on a leafless stem. Chives have a long history of use in the kitchen, with some recipes from China going back at least 5,000 years.
Parsley: Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) is a hardy biennial herb native to the Mediterranean region, widely cultivated as an annual. It has bright green, curly or flat leaves with a fresh, slightly peppery flavor. The plant grows up to 30-45 centimeters tall and thrives in well-drained soil under full or partial sunlight. Parsley is commonly used as a garnish, spice, or vegetable in culinary dishes and is rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as antioxidants. Its fresh leaves, seeds, and roots are all utilized, contributing to its popularity in various cuisines worldwide.
Wild Rocket Salad: Wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia), plus mustard, kale, greek cress, mizuna - a tangy, tasty and attractive mix of salad leaves which can be grown indoors or out. Rocket is a hardy plant with a distinct, peppery flavour, making it a popular addition to salads and culinary dishes. Wild rocket blooms from spring to autumn, producing small, yellow flowers that attract pollinators.
Created by conservation scientists and 100% British made, Seedball is a unique innovation to help more people grow bee and butterfly-friendly wildflowers. They are manufactured in-house using a mixture of UK-native seeds, clay, peat-free compost and chilli powder to create a protective casing against seed predators (e.g. birds and ants).
They’re incredibly easy to use - scatter (no digging!) on top of soil, and with rain and warm sun, the seeds will grow!
Emily & Ana, the creators of Seedball, are on a mission to help increase the abundance of British wildflowers and wildlife that depend upon them. They believe that if we can all better use whatever space we have available to us (whether a back garden, balcony, window box, little patio etc) we can together have a hugely beneficial impact on our local ecosystems.
They want Seedball to inspire a wildlife gardening revolution while providing a very handy way of going about it! Conservation is in the heart and soul of Seedball and one day we dream to fund their own Seedball wildflower reserves.
